Healthy Writers Club: Hiking and Writing

It's time for the weekly Healthy Writers Club hosted by Shallee McArthur. While the butt-in-chair idea works great for writers, it's not so great when we're trying to be healthy. So, once per week we will check in to let you know how we're doing health-wise and how it relates to writing.

I didn't do so well this past week on my health endeavor. But I have a excuse reason. I had visitors for the week.

However, between making personalized bookmarks and a personalized aspen walking stick with my sister, we did manage a five mile hike at Mueller State Park. It was absolutely gorgeous with the pines interspersed with gold and red aspen leaves.

The weather was clear and perfect, and the view of Pikes Peak was an added bonus. A nice little picnic completed the trip.

So, how does all this relate to writing? Well, I may have thought about writing while I was hiking.

NOT!

I'll do better next week:)

How did you do?

First, I love that your Running Widget says the last song you listened to was "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner.

Second, I spend my half hour stationary bike ride every morning thinking about what comes next in my WIP. It has brought me some good productivity these last few weeks since I started riding again.

Ahh, love the picture. I have a view like that outside my window, but much prefer to get out and breathe it in.

I do some of my best processing on my morning jogs or hikes. Sometimes I think about a WIP, other times, I let the emotions come to the surface. There's something about the lack of "stuff" competing for my attention, the peace of the outdoors, and the steady (albeit slow) thud of my feet that is very soul-cleansing.

Great post.

Envious of the hike, beautiful area. I think walking/hiking is the best way to inspire the muse. I've solved more WIP problems while walking.
This is my first visit to the Healthy Writers Club, I hope to catch up next week. Inspired of course, by all these posts to hit the trail and start a yoga program. That's the goal, we'll see...

Hi, Gwen,
That picture looks like a painting. Your outing must have been great and you got some exercise in too.

Joshua, exercising does that for me, as well. I think of all kinds of crazy stuff when I'm walking or running. It's very meditative.

Julie, exercise does seem to open some kind of channel that's very cleansing.

Shallee, Mueller State Park is about 10 miles from me. It is gorgeous!

Yolanda, beauty helps to inspire the muse. Good luck on your yoga. I hear so many good things about it.

Joy, that's fall in Colorado. It's gorgeous here right now!
